Spiritual, Moral, Social and Culture Development
At Newark Orchard School, we recognise that the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) of pupils plays a vital role in enabling them to grow as individuals and to engage meaningfully with the world around them. We believe that SMSC development is fundamental to pupils’ learning, wellbeing and preparation for adult life.
Our curriculum and wider school experiences provide pupils with opportunities to explore and develop their own values, beliefs and understanding of the world. We support pupils to develop a strong sense of identity, self-worth and belonging, whilst fostering respect for others and an appreciation of diversity within modern Britain.
As a special school, we recognise that many of our pupils require additional support to understand relationships, social expectations and the wider world. SMSC development is therefore carefully embedded throughout the curriculum and daily life of the school to ensure that pupils develop the knowledge, understanding and personal skills needed to thrive.
Through our teaching and wider provision we aim to help pupils:
• Develop spiritual awareness, including reflection on their own experiences, feelings and beliefs.
• Understand the difference between right and wrong, and develop a sense of fairness, responsibility and respect.
• Build positive relationships, learning to cooperate, communicate and contribute to their community.
• Appreciate and celebrate different cultures, traditions and beliefs, while recognising shared values.
• Develop confidence, resilience and respect for themselves and others.
At Newark Orchard School, SMSC development is promoted through the curriculum, enrichment opportunities, community experiences and daily interactions across the school. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their experiences, develop empathy and recognise the impact of their actions on others.
We also provide opportunities for pupils to engage with the wider community and develop an understanding of life beyond school. This helps prepare them for their next stages in education, employment and independent living.
By fostering a safe, respectful and inclusive environment, Newark Orchard School aims to ensure that every pupil is supported to grow as an individual, develop meaningful relationships and participate positively in society.
